Description
20 Hungate is an 18th-century house that stands two storeys tall, constructed from coursed stone and rendered, topped with a pantile roof. The building features two upper windows, one with a stone lintel and hung sashes with glazing bars, and the other with a wooden lintel. The ground floor has four irregular windows, two of which are hung sashes with glazing bars and stone lintels, while the other two are half-length modern windows likely replacing former doorways. There is a plain doorway in the gable end, and a section at right angles includes an elliptical carriage archway with a blocked fanlight beneath a circular window. The roof is made of Welsh slate, and there is a plinth at the base. A plaque indicates that this was the residence of Dr. John Kirk, the founder of the Kirk Museum in York, from 1910 to 1938. The Forest Vale Hotel and wall form a group with several nearby properties, including Nos 1 to 7, 9 to 15, 17 to 22, 24 to 26, No 26A, and No 27, among which Nos 7, 9, 10, 22, and 24 are noted for local interest.
