Description
Milestone located approximately 500 metres south of the junction with Scarthingwell Lane. This milestone dates from the late 19th century and is made of ashlar with a cast-iron plaque. It has a triangular shape with a semi-circular head and stands about one metre high. The raised inscription is painted black against a white background, reading 'TADCASTER & DONCASTER / ROAD / SAXTON / CUM / SCARTHINGWELL' around the head. The north facade displays 'DONCASTER / 23 MILES / PONTEFRACT / 10 3/4 MILES / FERRYBRIDGE / 8 MILES', while the south side shows 'YORK / 13 3/4 MILES / TADCASTER / 4 1/4 MILES'.
