Description
Milestone located approximately 20 metres north of the junction with Old London Road. This milestone dates from the late 19th century and is made of ashlar stone with a cast-iron plaque. It has a triangular shape with a semicircular head and stands about 1 metre high. The raised inscription is painted black against a white background, reading 'TADCASTER & DONCASTER / ROAD / TOWTON' around the head. On the north side, it indicates distances to Doncaster (25 miles), Pontefract (12 3/4 miles), and Ferrybridge (10 miles). The south side shows distances to York (11 3/4 miles) and Tadcaster (2 1/4 miles).
