Description
This is a milestone located approximately 100 metres north of the junction with Scarthingwell Lane in Saxton with Scarthingwell. It dates from the late 19th century and is made of ashlar stone with a cast-iron plaque. The milestone has a triangular shape with a semicircular head and stands about one metre high. The raised inscription is painted black on a white background, displaying the following information: 'TADCASTER & DONCASTER / ROAD / SAXTON / CUM / SCARTHINGWELL' around the head, 'DONCASTER / 24 MILES / PONTEFRACT / 11 3/4 MILES / FERRYBRIDGE / 9 MILES' on the north side, and 'YORK / 12 3/4 MILES / TADCASTER / 3 1/4 MILES' on the south side.
