Description
Grimston Tower is a water tower built around 1840 by Decimus Burton for the second Lord Howden. It is constructed from tooled magnesian limestone and features a lead roof. The tower has a square base that tapers to an octagonal top and is designed in an Egyptian style with four stages. At the base, there is a stepped plinth and a side entrance that consists of an eight-fielded-panel tapered door, which retains some decorative ironwork on the top two panels. The entrance is framed by a pedimented ashlar door-case, with a lintel that features a mask. The other sides of the tower have window openings with moulded sills, all within similar surrounds that do not have masks. The first stage has a moulded band, and there is a sill band as well. Each face has ten-pane casements. The second stage includes a moulded band and a round-arched window opening with a moulded sill, along with an oculus above. A modillion cornice runs around the top, leading to an octagonal cupola topped with a conical roof. Inside, there is a spiral staircase.
