Description
Turpin Hall Farm is a farmhouse dating from the late 17th century, with later additions and alterations. The building features a timber-framed rear wall, rendered magnesian limestone, brick stacks, and a cast-tile roof. It likely has an original central lobby-entry plan with an outshut at the rear. The farmhouse is two storeys high and has a three-cell plan. The central entrance consists of a part-glazed door, while the bay windows on the ground floor have plate glass sashes, and the other windows are casement types. Ashlar kneelers support the end and rear stacks. The right gable includes chamfered mullion windows in the basement, first floor, and gable.
Inside, the farmhouse retains many original features, such as a large chamfered bressumer beam in the living room and an open well staircase with remnants of splat balusters and wall panelling that has a fluted frieze. There is also a very steep back staircase, a plank and muntin panelled room on the first floor, and plank and muntin panelling in the attic staircase. Several original doors are present, including 6-panel, 10-panel, and plank doors, the latter featuring iron latches. The first floor shows two jowled posts on the rear wall. The roof structure includes two levels of trenched purlins and queen struts. This farmhouse is a rare survival of a 17th-century house in the area, noted for its interior features.
