Description

Two houses, dating from around 1840. They are located on a corner site and extend onto Greengate. The houses are constructed of pink and cream mottled brick in English bond, with dressings of orange-red gauged brick and painted stone. The roof is slate, with coped gables and small, decorative kneelers featuring roll-moulded finials. Brick stacks are at the gable ends and where the two sections of the building meet. The plan is L-shaped.

The Old Maltongate front has two storeys and three gabled bays. A double stepped plinth runs along the front. A four-panel door is set beneath a four-pane overlight, all contained within a flat arch. The central bay creates a projecting frontispiece between giant pilasters, which have shoulders above the ground floor. This central section contains twelve-pane sash windows with painted stone sills on both floors. Similar windows are present in the outer bays. The first-floor windows are housed within half-dormers beneath the cross gables. All windows have flat arches with decorative triple keyblocks, except for the ground-floor centre window.

The Greengate front is also two storeys and has three cross-gabled bays, with a single stepped plinth. A recessed six-panel door is set within a flat-arched opening. The ground-floor windows are sixteen-pane sashes, while the first-floor windows are twentieth-century top-hung lights of sixteen panes. One window on the left end has been blocked. The window and gable detailing on this front is repeated from the Old Maltongate side.
