Description
55 and 57 Greengate are two houses built in the late 18th century, with some alterations made in the early 19th century. The front is made of coursed squared sandstone, set on a brick plinth, while the rear features orange-red, pink, and cream mottled brick arranged in English garden-wall bond. The houses have a pantile roof with brick ridge stacks located in the center and at both ends.
Both houses follow a central-entry plan and have a two-storey facade with five windows. The entrance to No. 55 features a four-panel door set beneath a flat arch made of voussoirs. At the left end of No. 55, there is a boarded door with a wedge lintel located in a former elliptical carriage arch, which is now blocked. No. 57 has a six-panel door with raised and fielded panels and a divided overlight, also beneath a flat arch made of gauged brick.
All windows in both houses are 12-pane sashes with painted stone sills and flat arches above them. On the rear, No. 55 has 12-pane sashes on the first floor and a large two-light dormer with large panes in the attic. No. 57 features one two-light large-pane sliding sash and two inserted windows on the first floor.
