Description
Leonard House is a house located on Old Maltongate in Malton, dating from the early 19th century but with earlier origins. The original structure is built of rubble stone and has been refronted in painted Flemish-bond brick. It features a dentil eaves cornice and a timber doorcase, along with a pantile roof that has coped gables and shaped kneelers, as well as brick end stacks. The house has a central stairhall plan with a rear wing and is two stories tall with a six-window front and a cellar.
The doorcase includes fluted pilasters, a frieze with a fluted center panel, and a cornice hood, with a door made of six raised-and-fielded panels and an overlight in panelled reveals. The original passage entry at the right end has been altered to a window. All windows are 12-pane sashes set in moulded frames, featuring painted stone sills and keyed flat arches made of gauged brick. There are also three roof lights.
Inside, the dogleg staircase rises to the attic and has shaped tread ends, column-on-vase balusters, and a ramped-up handrail. On the ground floor, all windows have raised-and-fielded panelling, and there is a dentil cornice in the room to the left. The fireplace alcoves in the room to the right are framed by keyed round-arched architraves. The former passage at the right end is tunnel-vaulted. In the attic, there is a small cast-iron firegrate in the room to the right.
