Description

Sandylands Farmhouse and the attached barn are located in Barrow in Furness. The farmhouse is dated 1623 but was likely rebuilt, with the barn added in the late 18th century. The building has been altered in the 20th century. It features roughcast sandstone and graduated slate roofs. The farmhouse is two storeys high with two windows on the first floor, and the barn's gable is on the left side, with the barn extending five bays to the rear.

The farmhouse has a recessed central doorway with a 20th-century part-glazed panelled door beneath a name and date panel. It has projecting sills on plain casement windows, a central ridge stack, and an end stack on the right. At the rear, there is a kitchen wing with a lean-to roof that adjoins the barn, which has a tall end stack. The barn's gable facing Harrel Lane features a slatted casement, square vents, and copings. On the left side, there is a wide passage doorway with a segmental arch and a tall square-headed waggon entrance to its right. A lean-to on the right has two boarded doors under wooden lintels and a recess open to the eaves. The right return has external steps leading to a boarded door.

Inside the barn, there are three bays in the roof supported by principal-rafter trusses. A partition wall separates this area from two additional bays, which have heavy floor framing that suggests the ground floor was used to accommodate a horse gin.
