Description
This building is a barn and cow house located immediately to the north-east of Sowerby Lodge Farmhouse in Barrow in Furness. It dates from the 18th century and was altered in the 19th century. The structure is made of red sandstone rubble with some cobbles and features a composition tile roof. It is a tall single-storey building with six bays.
On the right side of the barn, there is a large wagon entrance with quoined jambs and a wooden lintel. To the left, there is a cow house door with a flat arch, as well as a blocked door on the far right. The cow house also includes a six-pane casement window and a tall doorway with a plain lintel. At the rear, there is a broad arch with voussoirs that is now blocked.
Inside, only three principal-rafter trusses were visible during the survey, featuring reused curved principals and double purlins. The barn is included for its group value.
