Description

The Roman Catholic cemetery chapel at Borough Cemetery, dated 1872, is now used as a store. It was likely designed by the architectural firm Paley and Austin. The chapel features irregular limestone walling with red sandstone dressings and a graduated slate roof. It has a cruciform plan with a crossing tower in a Romanesque style.

Notable architectural details include a chamfered plinth and quoined angle buttresses. The entrance, located in the west gable, consists of double doors with decorative iron hinges set within a three-order arch adorned with colonnettes and zig-zag ornamentation. Above this entrance, there is a window that also features zig-zag detailing. The windows on each side of the chapel are positioned on continuous string courses and connected by impost bands. The transepts have tall central lights flanked by pairs of blind windows that include colonnette mullions. The east window consists of three lights, with the central light being taller and a hoodmould that extends over the side lights as a string course.

Additional features include a lobed eaves band, chamfered gable copings with an apex cross at the east end, and a twin flue stack rising from the south transept, along with terracotta ridge cresting. The crossing tower rises from a square base to an octagonal shape, featuring leaded windows on each side and columns at the corners. It has a carved corbel table and a lobed band at the eaves of its steep hipped roof, topped with a finial.

Inside, the chapel has red and blue floor tiles and yellow brick wall lining. The crossing area features semi-circular responds with carved capitals supporting arches decorated with nailhead ornament.
