Cemetery lodge now private house. c1874. By Paley and Austin (plan). Coursed limestone with red, ashlar sandstone dressings; graduated slate roof. 2 storeys; compact L-shaped plan with porch in angle. Chamfered plinth; quoins; sill bands and ground-floor impost band; plain sashes. Front gable has mullioned window of 2 round-headed lights beneath round-arched hoodmould; 2 round-arched windows over. String course across gable having shaped kneelers and copings with roll-moulded apex. Lean-to porch in angle on right has wooden superstructure and segmentally arched doorway with pendant; cusped round-arched light to right and 5 more on right return. Main roof: terracotta ridge cresting; ashlar stack with 5 rounded flues. Right return: gable with 3-light windows detailed as front. Situated at secondary entrance to Borough Cemetery at junction of Devonshire Road and Thorncliffe Road. Included for group value as part of original cemetery scheme. Plans survive and are dated November 1873. (Building Plans Register: 1873-: 520).
