Description
North Lodge is a cemetery lodge that has been converted into a private house, built around 1874 by the architectural firm Paley and Austin. The building is constructed of coursed limestone with red ashlar sandstone dressings and features a graduated slate roof. It has two storeys and a compact L-shaped plan, with a porch located in the angle of the structure.
Architectural details include a chamfered plinth, quoins, sill bands, and a ground-floor impost band. The windows are plain sashes. The front gable showcases a mullioned window with two round-headed lights beneath a round-arched hoodmould, along with two round-arched windows above. A string course runs across the gable, which is adorned with shaped kneelers and copings that have a roll-moulded apex.
The lean-to porch on the right features a wooden superstructure and a segmentally arched doorway with a pendant. To the right of the doorway, there is a cusped round-arched light, along with five additional lights on the right return. The main roof is topped with terracotta ridge cresting and has an ashlar stack with five rounded flues. The right return gable includes three-light windows that match the detailing of the front.
North Lodge is located at the secondary entrance to the Borough Cemetery, situated at the junction of Devonshire Road and Thorncliffe Road. It is included in the listing for its group value as part of the original cemetery scheme, with plans dated November 1873 still in existence.
