Description
Sowerby Lodge Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the late 17th century, with extensions from the 18th century and some alterations. It has a roughcast exterior over red sandstone and a graduated slate roof. The building is two storeys high with an attic and features three windows on the first floor. There is a later two-storey side wing with a single window against the east gable.
On the south side, there are two 20th-century casement windows on the ground floor and three above, all with projecting stone sills and plain lintels. The left part of the facade retains 17th-century dripmoulds that are interrupted by the windows. The roof has oversailing verges and features a circular end stack on the left and an irregular end stack on the right. The side wing on the right has a door to the left of a broad 20th-century casement window, both set in a stone surround with ovolo-moulded jambs; there is a similar window on the first floor and a tall end stack on the right.
At the rear, facing the farmyard, there is a central staircase wing with chamfered window openings. Inside, the ground floor left features a chamfered, triangular-headed ashlar fireplace. Blocked windows can be seen within the stair turret. In the attic, there are two blocked windows at each end, with the east gable featuring a cantilevered stack and soot traces from a former smokehood. The attic also has two trusses with curved principals that cross to support a diagonally-set ridge.
