Description
This building is a barn located immediately to the west of number 143 on Salthouse Road in Barrow in Furness. It dates from the mid-18th century and is currently used as a cattery and workshops. The structure is made of stone rubble with ashlar dressings and features a graduated slate roof. It is a two-storey, six-bay bank barn with a lower two-storey addition at the north end. The barn has a chamfered plinth, large quoins, and projecting throughs. There are three basket-arched doorways on the ground floor, with the central opening now converted into a window. To the right, there is a similar taking-in door on the first floor, and the gable copings are made of ashlar. The later addition on the right side has 20th-century sliding doors and a rounded corner. At the rear, there is a waggon entrance with a basket arch, sheltered by a slated canopy supported on wooden brackets. Inside, the barn features five principal-rafter trusses and triple purlins. The addition to the north has incomplete floor framing that indicates the former position of a horse gin.
