Description

The Harbour Hotel is a public house built around 1850. It features ruled stucco and a graduated slate roof, standing two storeys high with cellars and an attic. The building has three bays and includes a single-storey wing at the rear. The central door is square-headed and set in a rusticated panel, flanked by plain casement windows with projecting stone sills and painted surrounds. On the first floor, a sill band connects three similar windows, and there is a cemented eaves cornice. The building has end stacks.

On the left side, there is a three-bay gable with windows matching those at the front, along with a round-arched attic window. The flat-roofed wing at the rear has a blocked door to the right of two round-arched windows, which are divided by a column and linked by a hoodmould. There are semi-circular gratings at ground level on either side of the front door; the one on the right is original and made of cast iron, while the one on the left is a modern fabricated steel replacement. The building also features two modern roof windows at the front and three at the rear.

The Harbour Hotel, along with the buildings of St George's Square, contributes to the character of the new town of Barrow, which is centered around the Furness Railway terminus.
