Description

St George's House is a former vicarage, now converted into flats, likely built around 1860 by architect E.G. Paley, associated with the nearby Church of St George. The building is constructed of slate rubble with quoins and ashlar sandstone dressings, topped with a graduated slate roof. It has two storeys and an irregular T-shaped plan, showcasing Gothic Revival architectural style.

The south side of the building, which faces the church, features a layout of one bay followed by three bays, with the first bay projecting as a crosswing. The doorway in the third bay has a moulded pointed arch, with carved heads on the stops of the hoodmould. The other bays contain three-light windows, while the first floor has three-light windows in the wing and the second bay, a two-light window above the door, and another in bay four, set beneath a dichromatic arch.

Notable details include an ovolo-moulded stone gutter, gables on the wing and bay four with kneelers and chamfered ashlar copings, and three slate ridge stacks with ashlar offsets. The right return, which faces Salthouse Road, features a three-light window on each floor of the front wing, with the main range displaying similar windows, and a gable that includes a one-storey, canted bay window with a 1:2:1 light arrangement and transom beneath two two-light windows.
