Description
No. 298 Abbey Road is a lodge built around 1878 by Alfred Swan for JT Smith, who managed the Barrow Haematite Iron and Steel Company. The building is constructed from snecked, rock-faced red sandstone with ashlar dressings and features a green slate roof. It has a compact T-shaped plan with a side wing on the left and a porch at the rear.
On the right side, which faces the drive to Crosslands, there is a chamfered plinth and a two-light mullioned window with casements that have horizontal glazing bars and transom lights, topped with a continuous dripmould. The oversailing eaves are interrupted by a half-dormer that has a shorter two-light window beneath a hipped roof. The main roof is also hipped and adorned with terracotta ridges and finials.
The front facing Abbey Road includes a rectangular bay window beneath a catslide roof projection, while the side wing to the left features a half-dormer with a hipped roof. A truncated stack rises from the roof valley. At the rear, the porch is open-sided with pointed wooden arches and a lean-to roof, and it contains a square-headed door. Drawings for the lodge were approved in 1878, and the plans are preserved in the Building Plans Register.
