Description

West Gate Cottage is a pair of cottages that have been converted into a single dwelling, dated 1873. Designed by the architectural firm Paley and Austin for the Furness Railway Company, the building is constructed from red sandstone with ashlar dressings and features a tiled roof. The structure has an L-shaped plan, with a two-storey crosswing on the right and a one-storey, two-window sidewing that includes a porch at the angle. There is also a one-storey wing at the rear of the sidewing.

The exterior includes a chamfered plinth and large quoins. Windows are casements with glazing bars set in mullioned openings, featuring shouldered lights. The left sidewing has a buttress positioned between a three-light and a two-light window. An open-sided timber porch under a catslide roof is supported by turned balusters and pointed arches. The doorway leading into the crosswing has a roll-moulded, pointed arch.

In the crosswing, there are two two-light windows beneath a continuous dripmould, along with a three-light window and a slit in the coped gable. Both wings are adorned with decorative ridge cresting and ashlar ridge stacks with offsets, while a lateral stack is located on the right return of the crosswing. The left return of the sidewing features an altered pointed arch next to a two-light window, beneath a plaque that reads '1873/ WEST GATE COTTAGES'. Surviving plans for the building are dated 1872.
