Description
Furness Abbey Wall is a medieval precinct wall located in Barrow in Furness. It is constructed of red sandstone rubble and stands approximately 2 meters high where it is complete, featuring built-up triangular copings in some areas. The wall consists of two main sections. The south-west section runs from the West Lodge of Abbey House on Abbey Road to the remains of the West Gate on Manor Road, cresting the hill south of Amphitheatre Field and ending at the valley side of Mill Beck, with a total length of just under 1000 meters. The north-east section begins on the opposite side of the valley to Mill Beck and runs north-west, skirting the rear of South Lodge at Abbotswood on Manor Road, and ends in woodland to the north-west, measuring approximately 500 meters in length. This structure is also designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
