Description

South Lodge at Abbotswood is a lodge built in 1873 for James Ramsden, who was the first Mayor of Barrow. The building is half-timbered and sits on a red sandstone plinth with a red tile roof. It has two storeys and features a gable front with a side wing on the left and a porch under a catslide roof at the angle; there is a 20th-century addition on the right.

The lodge has transomed casements with small leaded panes and pargetted panels decorated with flowers, leaves, and the date. The front gable includes a canted-bay window with a configuration of 1:4:1 lights beneath a moulded bressumer. The eaves are coved and the hipped roof is interrupted by a second storey bay that has a 5-light window topped with a decorative bargeboard featuring a pendant.

On the left, the open-sided porch has a turned balustrade and columns, ogee spandrels, and an integral front gate. The porch plinth and balustrade extend to the left, connecting with an ashlar gate pier that has a carved panel and a ball finial. The door within the porch is topped with a decorative ogee lintel.

On the right return, there is a lateral stack with an offset ashlar plinth and twin octagonal flues, along with a matching ridge stack at the rear. The left return features coving to the eaves of the side wing and a 4-light oriel window, along with a pierced barge-board carved with a vine trail. This lodge was built to serve Abbotswood, which has since been demolished.
