Description
The bridge over Mill Beck and the attached gateway at Abbey Vale were built around 1873, with the bridge likely dating from the earlier 19th century. The structure is made of red sandstone rubble and features wrought-iron gates. The bridge has a single-span round arch made of dressed voussoirs, and the parapet walls splay out and end in simple piers, except where it connects to the embankment wall of Abbey Vale. The copings are chamfered ashlar. The gateway consists of double gates that span the bridge carriageway, featuring spiked dog bars, cross bracing, and curved top rails with barbed finials. The iron posts have matching finials, and the radial side panels extend over the bridge parapet. This structure is included for its group value.
