Description

The Weir and Gateway at Welbeck Abbey is a Grade II listed structure, dating from the late 19th century for the gateway and the early 20th century for the weir, designed by Hodgson of Loughborough. The weir is constructed of ashlar and features a single central arch on the south side, supporting a road that is bordered by balustraded parapets set on rock-face ashlar plinths. The parapets curve outward at the ends, turning at right angles and ending in a single pier topped with an urn.

The iron gateway includes gates, screens, and piers. It features a double iron gate with decorative fretwork and a central panel displaying a profile. This gate is flanked by single hollow iron piers on iron bases, also adorned with decorative fretwork and topped with iron coping and a family crest. Further to the sides are similar single gates and smaller piers, each topped with different crests. There are also smaller double gates and additional smaller piers with varying crests.

On either side of the gateway, there are three sets of decorative iron screens that decrease in height toward the outer edges, separated by two round decorative iron piers on iron bases with rounded iron coping, leading to a single similar pier that also decreases in height. It is noted that the first panel on the left, or north side, is missing.
