Description
The pair of lodges flanking the South Drive at Welbeck Abbey date from the mid-18th century and are likely designed by J. James. Constructed from ashlar stone and iron, each lodge features an embattled parapet with a moulded band that conceals the roof. They are set on a plinth and have a rectangular plan, consisting of a single storey and a single bay, with a projecting bay on each side. The entrance includes a double wooden door topped by an arched overpanel with a single central cusp, surrounded by a raised band that leads to an ogee arch with a finial. The rear face has a similarly arched dummy window in the same style. On the road side, each bay is flanked by single quatrefoil fixed lights. Additionally, there is a decorative wrought iron pier attached to the road side bay, featuring a hollow design and coping adorned with decorative scrollwork.
