Description

The Water Department is a service building constructed around 1870, located on Woodyard Road in Welbeck Estate Village. It is built of ashlar stone and features slate roofs. The building has coped gables with kneelers and mannerist style orb finials, along with a moulded eaves band. It has a quadrangle plan and consists of one and a half storeys with seven bays.

The central doorway has a panelled double wooden door with a keystone in a flat arch and rusticated jambs. This doorway is flanked by single glazing bar sash windows, with additional similar doorways and sash windows beyond. Above the central doorway, there are three large window openings, which are now blocked at the bottom, alternating with four smaller openings, all fitted with glazing bar sashes.

To the left, there is an eight-bay wing featuring five similar sash windows and three similar doorways, with eight smaller sash windows above. To the right, there is a seven-bay wing that includes a single doorway, five large doorways, and a 20th-century doorway, all with wooden doors. Above this wing are seven small glazing bar sashes.

The quadrangle is completed by a buttressed wall set on a plinth, which is coped and stepped. The wall has a central entrance with single outer Tudor style arched doorways, each with wooden doors and hood moulds. The gables of the outer wings, which are one and a half storeys plus an attic and consist of three bays, each have a central blind archway with an arched rusticated surround and keystone, flanked by single glazing bar sashes. Above these are three similar, smaller sashes, with the central sash set slightly higher. At the apex of each gable, there is a single oeil de boeuf window with a raised ashlar surround and keystone at each of the cardinal points. All window openings feature raised ashlar eared surrounds with keystones.
