Description

The building is a riding school, later used as a warehouse, completed in 1869. It is constructed of ashlar, cast iron, and glass, with a shaped tile roof. A moulded eaves band sits above a plinth. The design follows a quadrangle plan and is two storeys high.

The south and north frontages each have 19 bays. The central and outer bays project and have coped gables topped with mannerist-style orb finials. The central bay features a large rusticated carriage archway with a bracketed keystone and a double wooden door. Flanking this are vermiculated rusticated pilasters which support an entablature topped with two similar half finials. To either side of the central bay there are eight blind arches in rusticated surrounds with keystones. The outer bays have single doorways and surrounds in a similar style. Above the arches are glazing bar fixed lights within raised ashlar surrounds, with a keystone and decorative ashlar scrolls at each corner. A slightly projecting hood with decorative strapwork is supported by two consoles. The outer bays feature similar single windows and surrounds to the central bay.

The east and west frontages each have five bays, mirroring the south front with a central projecting gabled bay. This bay contains a central doorway and surround similar to that on the south front. Flanking the doorway are single recessed panels with raised ashlar eared surrounds and keystones, alongside single vermiculated rusticated arched doorways with bracketed keystones and double wooden doors. Above is a central light and surround mirroring the south front. Flanking this are two glazing bar fixed lights within raised ashlar eared surrounds with keystones.

Inside, the riding school has a glass and iron vaulted roof supported on Doric cast iron columns and decorative brackets, positioned 3 metres from the walls to create aisles. The east and west ends have single, large, central arched lights with decorative iron glazing. A modillion and dentil cornice runs along the top of the interior. The building measures 385 feet by 112 feet and stands 52 feet high. The western half of the building is located within the parish of Holbeck, while the eastern half lies within the parish of Welbeck.
