Description
A stable block, now converted into flats and garages, along with a gate lodge, dating to approximately 1860 on the Welbeck Estate. The building is constructed of ashlar with shaped tile roofs, incorporating coped gables with kneelers and mannerist style orb finials, and numerous stacks. Moulded eaves bands are present, set upon a plinth. It comprises a quadrangle plan with a wing to the rear right, and a lodge projecting from the rear right of this, forming a smaller secondary quadrangle.
The south front, which faces the main quadrangle, has six bays. A central, projecting gabled bay features a vermiculated rusticated carriage archway with a bracketed keystone and is flanked by vermiculated rusticated pilasters supporting an architrave with two similar half-finials. Flanking the archway are three large arched doorways, each with panelled wooden doors, rusticated surrounds, and keystones. Above, a single glazing bar sash is set in a raised ashlar surround with a keystone and decorative ashlar scrolls at each corner; two consoles support a slightly projecting hood with decorative strapwork above. This is flanked by two small glazing bar sashes. The projecting eight-bay wings have similar doorways and fenestration. The east front, with thirteen bays, features two projecting gabled bays, each containing a single glazing bar sash, a keystone, flanking marginal sashes, and vermiculated rusticated pilasters topped by an architrave and orbs. The southernmost bay has a further pair of vermiculated rusticated pilasters between a sash and marginal sashes. Above are single glazing bar sashes in similar surrounds to those on the centre south. Remaining openings are either glazing bar sashes or recessed panels.
A single-storey-plus-attic, three-bay lodge is attached via a coped wall with a Tudor style arched doorway. The west front has a central gabled bay with a central 2-light casement, a Tudor style arched doorway, and a hood mould to the left, accompanied by single similar, smaller casements to the right and above. Casements have drip moulds. A 20th-century lean-to is attached to the right, alongside a single, gabled two-storey bay. Beyond this is a coped wall, and behind it, the secondary courtyard, featuring glazing bar sashes, carriage doorways in rusticated surrounds with keystones, and doorways with rusticated jambs and keystones. The right wing of the quadrangle, with glazing bar sashes and recessed panels, projects, and has a single central projecting gabled bay, mirroring the centre south front.
