Description
This listing describes a pair of lodges that flank the entrance to Glass Court Drive, along with a tunnel entrance and wall. The lodges date from the mid-18th century and mid-19th century, constructed from ashlar stone. Each lodge, likely designed by J. James, features an embattled parapet with a moulded band that conceals the roof, and they are set on a plinth.
The lodges have a rectangular plan, are single-storey, and consist of a single bay with a projecting bay on each side. Each lodge has a doorway with double wooden doors and an arched overlight that includes a single central cusp, surrounded by a raised band that leads to an ogee arch with a finial. The rear of the left lodge has a similarly arched glazing bar sash in a matching surround, and there are single quatrefoil fixed lights flanking the road-side bay.
Behind the left lodge is a rusticated and coped 19th-century wall that leads to the tunnel entrance. This wall is set on a plinth and features a panelled parapet with impost bands. The central carriage archway is large and rusticated, with a shaped surround, voussoirs, and a keystone, along with double wooden doors. A moulded band runs above the arch, and it is flanked by pilasters topped with urns. To the right, there is a single rusticated and coped wall, also set on a plinth, which ends in a coped pilaster surmounted by an orb.
