Description
Furness Abbey Cottage is a house built around 1873 for the Furness Railway Company. It is constructed from squared red sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings and features a slate roof. The building has a T-shaped plan and stands two storeys tall. The left side has a tall, gabled crosswing with large quoins and a two-light window that has a shouldered lintel beneath a relieving arch. On the first floor, there is a two-light window with curved heads, set within a pointed-arched panel, and the gable has ashlar copings with plain kneelers and a finial. The main range on the right has been altered and now includes a door within a glazed and slated lean-to porch, a two-light window to the left on the first floor, and an original slit window above the porch. The building features stone gutter blocks, a truncated end stack on the right, and a tall stack with offsets at the junction with the crosswing. On the left return, there is a single-light window under a relieving arch to the left of the front window. This cottage was originally built as a coachman's house to serve the Furness Abbey Hotel. The original coach house and stables have been demolished, leaving only a wall to the north and a small single-storey building to the west. The cottage is included for its group value.
