Description

Abbey Vale is a former Porter's Lodge, now a house, built in 1873 by the architectural firm Paley and Austin for the Furness Railway Company at Furness Abbey Station. The building has an irregular plan and is constructed from snecked red sandstone, topped with a renewed tile roof. It is a single-storey structure featuring a semi-octagonal center flanked by side wings and a 20th-century addition at the rear.

On the west side, there is an open-sided wooden porch with a catslide roof that shelters a doorway adorned with a date and initials on a decorated lintel. The semi-octagon is illuminated by cross windows with leaded lights set in moulded ashlar surrounds, topped by a string course. The hipped roof has oversailing eaves and a three-flue ashlar stack on a shared base. The lower side wing to the west features a battered embankment wall and a gabled half-dormer above a three-light mullioned window on the left return, with a lean-to on the right return. An embankment wing wall connects to an adjoining gateway and a bridge over Mill Beck. A plaque on the building reads 'PORTERS LODGE'.

Abbey Vale is designated at Grade II due to its architectural interest, being well-designed with attractive details, and its group value as part of a multi-period site that includes the ruins of Furness Abbey and several other listed buildings associated with the railway.
