Description
The Lodge to Crosslands is a building constructed around 1875 for JT Smith. It is made of snecked red sandstone with a slate roof and has a T-shaped plan that is entered through a porch on the left side. The lodge is one storey with an attic and features a battered plinth and large quoins. The gabled front includes a one-storey canted-bay window with plain sash windows arranged in a 1:2:1 pattern beneath a hipped roof, as well as a mullioned two-light window above it. The steeply-pitched roof has decorative bargeboards.
On the right side, there is a set-back wing that has a narrow sash window within a chamfered stone surround, and the right end of the roof is hipped with a ridge stack. The left return, which faces the drive to Crosslands, features a gabled porch with a pointed arch and side windows, a square-headed door, and a mullioned two-light window to the right. JT Smith was the manager of the Barrow Haematite Iron and Steel Company, and drawings for this lodge were submitted in 1875. The building is included for its group value.
