Description
SEDBERGH
SD69SE DOWBIGGIN LANE, Dowbiggin 162-1/6/332 (North side (off)) Kilnbeck Farmhouse and attached barn
II
Farmhouse with attached bank barn. House probably early to mid C18, altered; barn probably C19, also altered. House of thin coursed sandstone rubble with quoins, graduated blue slate roof with stone riggings; barn of roughly-coursed mixed rubble with corrugated sheet roof. Linear plan on north-east/south-west axis, the house forming the eastern half and facing south, 1:2 bays (the first probably not service rather than domestic) and probably double-depth. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys and 2 windows, symmetrical except for the first bay, with a square-headed doorway in the centre and 2 oblong windows on each floor. The doorway has a C20 door and pitched stone-slate above (as if for a gabled porch); the windows are all 8-pane hornless sashes with vertical glazing bars only. The bay to the left has a part-glazed doorway with a floating stone-slate course above. The BARN to the left, on a descending slope, has a square-headed wagon doorway to the right-hand half, with a stone-slate drip-course above, 2 courses of through-stones to the left and one small square window to the lower level. INTERIOR not inspected. A good example of a typical sturdy Dales house, forming an excellent feature in a striking landscape.
