Description

Kilnbeck Farmhouse and attached barn is a farmhouse with a barn that is likely from the early to mid 18th century, with some alterations. The farmhouse is built of thin coursed sandstone rubble and features quoins, topped with a graduated blue slate roof that has stone riggings. The barn, probably from the 19th century, is constructed of roughly-coursed mixed rubble and has a corrugated sheet roof. The building has a linear plan oriented on a north-east/south-west axis, with the house making up the eastern half and facing south. It has a symmetrical façade with two storeys and two windows, although the first bay is likely not for service but domestic use.

The exterior features a square-headed doorway in the center with a 20th-century door and a pitched stone-slate above, resembling a gabled porch. There are two oblong windows on each floor, all of which are 8-pane hornless sashes with only vertical glazing bars. The left bay includes a part-glazed doorway with a floating stone-slate course above it. The barn, positioned to the left on a descending slope, has a square-headed wagon doorway on the right side, with a stone-slate drip-course above, two courses of through-stones to the left, and one small square window at the lower level.

The interior has not been inspected. This farmhouse is a good example of a sturdy Dales house and contributes significantly to the striking landscape.
