Description

Woods is a farmhouse with an attached barn, likely dating from the 17th century. It has been altered and is now approaching a state of dilapidation. The building is constructed from roughly coursed sandstone rubble with quoins and features a stone slate roof. The farmhouse has a single-depth, two-unit plan oriented on a north-south axis, facing west, with a three-bay barn extending to the south. There is a large outshut or porch at the front of the barn that slightly overlaps the house, along with an added lean-to shippon at the rear of the barn.

The exterior of the house consists of two low storeys and three windows. The north bay features a crudely-shouldered doorway to the right, just left of the chimney stack, which contains an old batten-and-board door with three vertical boards, three rows of studs, and two strap hinges, along with a stone slate drip-band above. Above this doorway, there is a small square six-pane window that is damaged. The second bay has a stone slate drip-course over the ground floor, a one-light fire-window, and a blocked square window at ground level, with another one-light window and a small four-pane window on the first floor above. A substantial square chimney is located on the ridge at the junction of the bays. The north gable wall has through-stones, while the rear wall is blind. The outshut of the barn has a doorway to the left and is topped with a corrugated iron roof. The rear wall of the barn features a square loading window, and the shippon has a doorway in its rear wall.

The positioning of the doorway and chimney stack at the junction of the two bays suggests that the building may have originally been a single unit that was extended at an early date, or it could have been constructed as two units with a hearth-passage entry, which would be unusual for this area. The interior has not been inspected.
