Description

Whernside Manor, now an outdoor pursuits hostel, was likely built in the mid to late 18th century and subsequently altered. The house is constructed from thin-coursed sandstone rubble with freestone dressings, topped with a shallow-hipped slate roof. The building follows a T-plan, comprising a square main range facing west and a long service wing to the rear.

The exterior features raised regular quoins, a first-floor sillband, and a corbel table. A round-headed doorway, centrally positioned, has a plain surround and a fanlight with radiating glazing bars, accessed via a flight of four steps with nosings and protected by wrought-iron railings. There are two tall windows on the ground floor and three slightly shorter windows above; all have unusual bi-partite sashes with narrow leaves of four square panes on either side of a central wooden mullion. Small, round-headed basement windows are also present. The roof now has a pair of low, flat-roofed dormers flanked by skylights, and a low, wide multi-flue chimney stack at the apex, which lacks pots. The left return has a 16-pane sash window at ground floor and a blind window, with a cross-window and a 16-pane sash above. The lower rear wing is of similar style.

The interior has not been inspected.

The house was built by the Sill family of Rigg End and Deepdale Head, whose wealth may have partly derived from slave plantations in Jamaica. This is commemorated by two wall monuments located at the Church of St Andrew in Main Street.
