Description
This is a small barn or shippon located to the north-east of Blake Rigg, likely built in the 18th century and altered over time. It is constructed from large dry-jointed sandstone rubble that has been brought to courses, with quoins, and features a stone slate roof. The barn has a rectangular three-cell plan oriented on an east-west axis and faces south, with full-height internal stone partitions; the third cell is set back slightly.
The central section includes a doorway with a wooden lintel and a stone-slate drip-band, while the set-back third bay has a doorway at the junction with a stone lintel. The west gable wall features a doorway near the south corner, which has a stone lintel and a board door, along with a small opening near the rear corner.
Inside, the central bay has a wooden manger on the rear wall, and the purlin roofs are supported by stone partition walls. This barn is part of a significant and prominent farmstead group at Blake Rigg, forming a cohesive architectural context with Blake Rigg itself.
