Description
Hallbank is a small farmhouse or cottage, now functioning as a house, likely built in the early to mid 18th century, with some alterations. The exterior features white-painted rubble and a stone slate roof. It has a single-depth, two-unit plan with a later extension at the rear. The building stands two low storeys high and has three windows arranged in a 1:2 grouping. There is a stone-slate drip-course over the ground floor on both sides, and a wide lean-to porch that is slightly offset to the left. The porch includes side benches and a square-headed inner door with a part-glazed panel. Flanking the porch are two 2-light casement windows with glazing bars, and there is a small square window on the first floor to the left, along with two small rectangular windows to the right, all featuring 9-pane glazing. A gable chimney is located to the left, now partly integrated into the gable wall of the adjoining house. The rear of the building has a 20th-century single-storey flat-roofed extension.
Inside, there is a lateral stone partition wall to the right of the doorway on the ground floor. The housepart to the left contains two axial beams made from reused cruck timbers, exposed joists, and a square stone fireplace with chamfered jambs. In the rear right corner, there is a spiral newel staircase with stone steps and a chamfered newel post. The parlour to the right features 20th-century beams, while the upper floor has modern wooden partitions. Despite some alterations and the addition of modern features at the rear, Hallbank remains a recognizable example of its type and date.
