Description
The War Memorial, located in a public park in Barrow-in-Furness, was built in 1919 by Major C. Oakley for the Barrow Haematite Steel Company. The memorial is made of Portland limestone and features iron railings and bronze plaques. It consists of a circular platform surrounded by railings, which is accessible by four flights of steps that have piers and balustrades adorned with bronze insets and guilloche ornamentation.
At the center stands an obelisk with a plinth that has convex corners and bronze plaques. The tapered square shaft of the obelisk is decorated with acanthus ornamentation and fluting, with a bronze wreath on each side. The plaques commemorate those who lost their lives in the Great War, and at each corner of the memorial are reliefs depicting an infantryman, a sailor, Liberty, and an angel. Additionally, attached to the railings are two plaques listing the names of those lost in World War II. This memorial serves as an imposing local landmark.
