Description

Cooke's Buildings are commercial buildings dated 1875, located on Abbey Road in Barrow-in-Furness. They are constructed of red brick with ashlar dressings and terracotta ornamentation, topped with a slate roof. The structure features three storeys and an attic, with two broad bays. Each bay has a three-light window flanked by single-light windows on the first and second floors, all designed in a High Victorian Gothic style. The three-light windows have plain sashes, except in the attic, and are set in recesses that include mid-floor terracotta panels.

The ground floor has been altered with 20th-century shop fronts situated between original pilasters. On the first floor, there is a moulded sill band, and the three-light windows feature shouldered transom lights. The single-light windows are set in recessed ashlar surrounds with decorative lintels, positioned behind pointed arches that have been cut back and feature hoodmoulds. The second floor has square-headed windows that are linked by sill and lintel bands, while the attic has a sill band.

In the first bay, there is a stepped three-light window with the date beneath a taller central arch, along with a banded panel under a pointed hoodmould. The gable is adorned with moulded copings and a finial. The second bay has a similar three-light window in a dormer with a hipped roof and finial, and there is a section of coped parapet on each side. The attic windows have been altered to include casements above brick infill.
