Description
Oxford Chambers is a commercial building located on Abbey Road in Barrow-in-Furness, built around 1875. It is constructed of red brick with ashlar dressings and features terracotta ornamentation, topped with a slate roof. The building stands three storeys high with an attic and consists of three bays.
The ground floor has been altered and now features a 20th-century shop front situated between original pilasters. On the first floor, there is a sill band that supports tall sash windows set in recessed ashlar surrounds. These windows have decorative lintels made of brick, pointed arches with hoodmoulds, and blue-brick relieving arches. Above, there is a decorative terracotta panel that displays the name 'OXFORD CHAMBERS' in encaustic tiles. The second floor features sill and lintel bands that connect the recessed sashes. The eaves are adorned with compound brick corbelling, and there is a flat-headed roof dormer with ten lights, as well as a truncated end stack on the right side.
