Description

These are three houses, originally five, located on The Square in Kirkoswald. Number 1 bears the date 1757 with the initials J.(&)B.S. above the entrance, while the other houses date to the late 18th century. The houses have rendered (plastered) walls; Number 1 has raised, vertically-jointed quoins (cornerstones), and all have sandstone slate roofs and rendered chimney stacks. Number 1 has two bays, while Number 3 (of a group of four) has two bays. The front doors are set in plain, painted stone surrounds. The windows are sash windows with two panes per sash, and retain their original glazing bars, set in plain, painted stone surrounds. The buildings are listed partly for their group value context alongside the adjoining Crown Hotel.
