Description
Two houses, Fairview and Number 24 The Square, were built in the early to mid-19th century. They are situated on the north side of The Square in Sandford. The houses are constructed of plastered rubble, with rubble stacks and brick chimney shafts, and have slate roofs. Fairview, on the left, is a two-room house, while the house to the right, Number 24 The Square, has a single-room plan. A shared end stack is present, adjoining the Lamb Inn to the left, while an axial stack sits between the two houses. The front elevation presents a regular three-window facade. Fairview has two windows and a central doorway, while Number 24 The Square has one window and a doorway at the right end. All windows are 12-pane sash windows. Both doorways have doorcases featuring fielded panel pilasters and moulded entablatures. Fairview has a panelled door dating to around 1980, whereas Number 24 The Square retains its original six-panel door. The property is included on the list for its group value, which encompasses the raised pavement in front, with its pitched stone surface, vulcan stone kerbs, and rubble retaining wall.
