Description
The village stocks, located on the west side of the War Memorial in Kirkoswald, are likely from the early 18th century. They are made of Penrith red sandstone and feature an iron hook set in lead. A long, narrow slab is embedded in the cobbles of the market place, with a hollowed top designed to accommodate two pairs of legs. In the center, a flat-bent hook holds two iron leg clamps, which could be locked individually on either side using iron locking pins, with the holes still visible. Similar stocks can be found at Gamblesby, and the stocks at Glassonby retain their ironwork.
