Description
High College is a house built in the early 18th century for the Fetherstonhaugh family of The College, which is reflected in its name. The building features random red sandstone rubble walls and a graduated sandstone slate roof, with stone chimney stacks at both ends and on the ridge. It has two storeys and four bays. The entrance is a top-glazed six-panel door set in a plain chamfered stone surround. On either side of the door are double sash windows with glazing bars, which have chamfered stone mullions. The upper floor has sash windows with glazing bars in a hollow-chamfered surround. Inside, the house has panelled doors throughout, and a late 18th-century staircase with oak treads and turned balusters. The building was formerly the Doctor's house and still displays its red lamp on the west end wall.
