Description
This milepost, dated 1825, is located on the roadside to the east of Croft House in Shap. It was created for the Heron Syke Turnpike Trust and features an oval foundry mark at the top center that reads "T. WINDER GATEBECK FOUNDRY." The milepost is made of cast iron and is approximately 3 feet high, with three concave sides and an ogee domical top. Separate plates are attached to the sides of the main casting, displaying town names and distances in raised letters. The left side indicates "SHAP," the center features the date, and the right side shows "KENDAL 16 MILES." The milepost is painted white, with the lettering, foundry mark, and top edges highlighted in black.
