Description

The Church of St Michael is a parish church that likely dates from the 12th century, with various later additions and alterations. A side aisle was added in the 13th century, the chancel was rebuilt in 1765, and the west tower was rebuilt in 1828. Extensive restoration occurred between 1898 and 1899, which included the rebuilding of the north vestry and chancel, as well as the addition of a south chapel, marked by a date stone on the south side. The church is constructed of ashlar and snecked rubble on a chamfered plinth, featuring stepped buttresses. It has graduated slate roofs with stone copings and apex crosses. The layout includes a west tower, nave with a south aisle, chancel with a south chapel, and a north vestry. The two-stage tower has 19th-century double doors with a four-centred head, louvred openings on the second stage, and a castellated parapet. The nave has four bays, extended to form a baptistry on the south side, and the chancel has two bays. Most windows are multi-light, with some original 16th-century examples, and there are single-light windows at each end of the north nave elevation.

Inside, the south arcade features four semicircular arches supported by stone columns with moulded plinths and capitals. There is a carved wooden pulpit from 1899 located in the northeast corner of the nave, and a re-used 17th-century communion rail with turned balusters. An octagonal stone pillar font at the east end of the south aisle was presented by Mrs. Bindloss in 1880, while a cylindrical polished granite font at the west end of the south aisle was presented by Shap Granite Co. in 1899. The church also contains some early 20th-century glass.
