Description
The Market Hall, now functioning as a library, dates back to around 1687 when Philip, Lord Wharton, obtained the market charter. The building features coursed rubble construction with quoins and has hipped roofs made of graduated slate with stone ridges. It stands at two low storeys and has a total of four bays.
On both the south and east sides, there are three-bay arcades with semicircular arches supported by squat columns. The lower sections of these arches are now blocked, while the arch-heads are glazed with diamond-leaded glass, most of which has panes set at different angles. Above the arcade on the south side, there are three small semicircular-headed recesses, and on the east side, there are two similar recesses with a blocked circular opening in between.
The east side also features a studded plank door on a lower lean-to at the north end. A central gabled projection on the east side of the roof includes a rectangular recess at the front and louvres on the sides. Additionally, there is a diagonally-set stack with a domical cap located at the roof ridge.
