Description
The Hermitage is a house dated 1691, featuring initials RES and IES, possibly for Ellwood. It has undergone later additions and alterations. The structure is built of wet-dashed rubble and has a 45-degree graduated slate roof with a stone ridge. The plan is U-shaped, with two storeys and six bays arranged as 1:4:1. The central block has a 19th-century panelled door framed by an architrave and topped with an embattled lintel, flanked by two windows on the left and one on the right. A dated panel is located between the floors in a corniced frame. There are three first-floor windows, all of which are sash windows with glazing bars set in original chamfered surrounds, previously mullioned 2-light, and all are under continuous hoodmoulds. The eaves feature a cornice.
The north wing includes a sash window with a small lancet above, both from the 19th century, along with a blocked ogee window head on the north return and a 20th-century casement inserted in the original chamfered 3-light opening on the south return. The south wing has a fixed window inserted in a door surround with a small lancet above, both from the 19th century. Decorative 19th-century bargeboards with pendants and finials adorn both wings, and there is a weather-vane on the north wing. The house also features corniced stone chimneys at the mid and ends.
