Description
The gateway adjoining Capella Extra is a Grade I listed structure located in Barrow in Furness. It serves as the entrance to the abbey precinct and dates from the post-Reformation period, likely from the 16th century, using materials from the medieval era. The gateway is constructed from squared red sandstone and features a Gothic carriage arch that spans Abbey Approach, alongside a pedestrian gate that connects to Capella Extra Portas.
The large carriage arch is double-chamfered and has a moulded hood with weathered carved stops, topped by a ragged parapet wall. The pedestrian gate is designed with a chamfered and cavetto three-order arch beneath a hoodmould with stops. This gateway marks the site of the original outer gate of the abbey precinct.
