Description
The gateway arch west of Lanercost Priory is an early 13th-century structure that was originally part of the gate tower of the priory. It is constructed from calciferous sandstone squared and coursed rubble, sourced from the nearby Roman Wall, with red sandstone dressings. The arch features a chamfered segmental design with three orders, a hood mould, and moulded corbel stops, along with fragments of fan vaulting. There are remains of the flanking walls, and the rear of the arch includes flanking buttresses. Additionally, the rear wall of the tower to the right has a blocked segment-headed entrance that once led to the porter's lodge.
