Description
The barn, located north-east of Abbey Farm, was originally the west range of the house of Sir Thomas Dacre and is built on the site of the Outer Court of Lanercost Priory. It dates from the mid-16th century, with 19th-century additions. The structure is made of mixed calciferous and red sandstone rubble, some of which comes from the demolished Priory, with original stone sourced from the Roman Wall. It features a graduated red sandstone slate roof with coped gables and a stone end chimney stack.
This long barn has two storeys. The rear wall, which faces the Vicarage gardens, includes a central section with two bays that have a blocked ground floor window and blocked two-light chamfered stone-mullioned windows above. The flanking walls are likely a 19th-century addition. The wall facing the farmyard appears to be entirely 19th-century, constructed from older stone. The barn has ground floor and loft plank doors, 19th-century windows with chamfered surrounds, and a large 20th-century sliding door. It is listed partly for its group value with the adjoining Vicarage.
